The Quaint Hamlet of Pringle Bay is a tourist
dream with restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets and art
studios a mere 29 km from Gordon's bay, Pringle Bay is an
isolated stretch of paradise located along a dramatic route
tipped as one of the most scenic drives in the world!
It is a area rich in biological diversity and steeped in
history. Here Khoisan Standlopers fished from rocky shores,
runaway slaves and “drosters” took refuge in the
caves carved by wind and sea. The area between the Palmiet
Lagoon and Kleinbot River near to where the Hangklip Hotel
stand today, was a popular holiday destination in the 1800’s
for farmers from the surrounding areas. The hotel was built
by John Pitt just before the second world war and was utilised
as a radar station during the war, manned by women of the
armed forces.
The mountain assumed military significance as a sentinel
guarding the eastern stretch of False Bay from the threat
of U-boats.

Today, refurbished and under new management the Hangklip
Hotel, magically bathed by two lighthouse beams streaming
from Cape Point and Cape Hangklip is now the perfect escape
for stressed city dwellers and adventure seeking tourists.
The restaurant with it’s popular Sunday buffets and
cosy fires and watering holes has grown in popularity and
it’s best advised to book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
Hangklip Hotel has also renovated the rooms and self catering
cottages which now offers some of the most affordable accommodation
in the Cape. This diverse little village situated on the ever
popular whale route offers bird watching, mountain trails
and pristine beaches are also home to baboons, klipspringers
and the occasional leopards - the bays and coves are well
known as the crayfish and fisherman’s paradise with
an abundance of this delicacy during the season.
There is access to surfing, scuba diving, angling, golfing
and boating with one of the most popular boat launching slip
area close to the Hangklip Hotel, next to Hoogwaterhuis, one
of the most unique houses that literally rises out of the
sea and rocks.
The quaint village of Pringle Bay has numerous art and craft
studios where the artist and the creative spirit is very much
alive reminding one of the same vibe one finds in Knysna in
the Garden Route. |
