The sudden downturn in the economy has caught everyone by
surprise. The negative mood swing sweeping the country due
to factors such as the Zimbabwean crisis, Eskom’s inability
to supply the demand and the weak rand which adding to this,
the Arab oil countries holding the Western World to ransom
with talk of the possibility of crude oil to reach $200 a
barrel!
This has resulted in the unprecedented increase in interest
rates and the cost of living we are now experiencing. This
is all depressing and scary and this scenario is now further
fueling the crime situation via burglaries which we all know
is already out of hand.
Statistics are revealing a somber picture with a marked increase
in
burglaries in homes and business premises as people are cold
and hungry and can’t get sustainable jobs and find stealing
as the only alternative in order to survive. The economic
honeymoon we all experienced during the last years has now
abruptly come to a halt and the poor and middle class can’t
cope with bond increases, the cost of debt and an income that
has not kept pace with the increases.
NOW...What can one do? We can’t simply stop living
or all emigrate to greener pastures, to countries with less
crime such as New Zealand,
Australia, Canada and so forth. We are now forced to accept
the situation as it is and realize that times have changed
and we must adapt.
